Highgate Cemetery (East) - London
Opened in 1860, Highgate East is the newest extension of the cemetery, where the most famous graves are to be found.
That's where we started our visit, last summer, before the guided tour in Highgate West...

I visited Highgate about 20 years ago during a visit to London, it was on my "see this" list. The friend I was visiting could not understand why I wanted to see an old cemetery and not the Crown Jewels. (Saw those too.) I really love the way the forest is trying to reclaim the land and that they don't cut it back and clear it the way they do at most cemeteries here in the US.
Thanks for sharing these, they are lovely.

You're welcome :)
I love how vegetation, nature, has a very special place in England, up to the middle of the cities, as well as cemeteries. In France, some parts of Père Lachaise had gone deliciously wild, but last time I went there, they were cleaning everything. In France, nature is allowed, but only in its place, carefully bounded...

Last time I was there Douglas Adams was still alive! I hope to go again at some point but I'm not living in England anymore.

great photos! I have been there too.. I would have loved to see more of the Western Part as the guided tour only show you bits.. also on the Eastern one you miss a lot, no matter hiow much you look and explore! I love that cemetery!

Thank you !
The Western guided tour is a bit frustrating, yes - I would have loved to spend much more time there, all alone amist the trees and crumbling graves. But it was interesting too :)
