Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France

I have been wanting to return to Pere Lachaise for a long time, and I finally managed it two days ago. The place is a massive 44 hectares, and I took so many photos that I will be posting them over the course of several entries - wouldn't want to overload you!

There are days that might outmeasure years
Days that obliterate the past
And make the future of the colour which they cast
- grave of an eight year old child.

To our darling little Sandrine - another eight year old.

There are a lot of these above ground structures, most of which contain a small altar...

...and some are in worse shape than others.

Those of you familiar with this cemetery will have been expecting this next shot...

...the grave of the Lizard King, a/k/a James Douglas Morrison, the lead singer of the Doors. Since my last visit, cemetery staff have sandblasted off the stencils of his face which were spray painted literally all over the cemetery; they have also fenced the grave off in an attempt to stop people leaving stuff on it - but as you can see, people remain undeterred. Including yours truly, because when I promise a friend that I'll do something for them, I do it.

"This is the end" - scrawled on a sign taped to the fence.

More to follow in a day or two!
